These slabs of petrified wood are from trees that were alive during the Triassic period (552 to 201 million years ago) in the Tulear province of Madagascar. It likely comes from Araucarioxylon, a now extinct genus of evergreen tree that makes up the bulk of petrified wood from Madagascar. One side of each slab has been polished to a shine, while the edges have been left rough as originally found.
