This copal is from the Fianarantsoa province of Madagascar, and contains insects that got trapped in the tree resin before it hardened!

Copal, like amber, is formed from hardened tree resin—the main difference between the two is age. While amber has completely fossilized over tens of millions of years, copal has only undergone partial fossilization and is not as hard as a result.

Madagascar copal varies significantly in age, which is why scientists date it broadly in the Quaternary Period (less than 100 years ago to 2.5 million years ago). It is the preserved resin of Hymenaea verrucose, the East African copal tree.
