These trilobites from the genus Gerastos come from Morocco, and are still embedded in their original rock matrix! The fossils are incredibly three dimensional, with some of the trilobites being in an enrolled position. Some repairs are to be expected, especially cracks which have been fused back together.

What were trilobites?
Trilobites were a large group of marine arthropods, which are invertebrate animals characterized by a segmented body and hard exoskeleton (like crabs or lobsters). The first trilobites appeared over 500 million years ago in the Cambrian Period, and spread worldwide until the Permian mass extinction about 250 million years later. Their hard outer shell made them a great candidate for fossilization, and as a result they appear frequently in the fossil record—over 25,000 species have been described!
