These are samples of a meteorite, composed of iron, nickel and cobalt, which fell to earth nearly four to five thousand years ago in Chaco Province, Argentina.
Part of a local legend, the group of meteorites were discovered by the indigenous people of the region and dubbed Piguem Noralta. The Spanish colonists translated this as Campo del Cielo, or “Field of the Sky.'' Though documented in the late 1500s, it wasn’t until the 18th century that it was actually analyzed, and then not until the 19th century when recovery work began.
Experts estimate that the meteorite itself dates to 4.5 billion years ago, meaning that it was formed along with the rest of our solar system!
