This fossil comes from a dinosaur named Edmontosaurus, more specifically its part of an ossified tendon used to hold the tail of this herbivorous dinosaur in place. These fossils can be found in the Hell Creek formation of the upper Cretaceous, making them about 73-66 million years old.
Edmontosaurus had fairly rigid tails with large muscular attachments. These Tendons acted as support for the tail much like suspension wires hanging on a bridge. Edmontosaurus had huge tails that measured up to a staggering 23 feet (7 m) long. Making these tendons an extremely important part of the functionality of these animals.
