Labradorite is a stunning gemstone renowned for its mesmerizing play of colors, known as labradorescence. This phenomenon manifests as vibrant flashes of blue, green, yellow, and sometimes even purple when the stone is viewed from different angles. Labradorite is a type of feldspar mineral, belonging to the plagioclase series, and is composed of calcium, sodium, and aluminum. It has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Labradorite is typically found in igneous rocks, particularly in gabbro, basalt, and anorthosite. It forms during the cooling of magma deep within the Earth's crust, where slow cooling allows for the development of its unique crystal structure. The labradorescence in Labradorite is caused by the scattering of light between layers of different compositions within the stone, known as lamellar twinning. It was first discovered in Labrador, Canada, hence its name, but it is also found in various locations around the world, including Finland, Madagascar, Russia, and the United States.
